An astrolabe is an astronomical computer used to determine time based on the position of the Sun and stars. Thanks to it, people could find out the time centuries ago. This question, trivial today, was a great challenge in the pre-smartphone era. It made it possible to determine the timing of phenomena such as sunrises and sunsets, enabled determining the positions of stars and directions. It was used for many advanced calculations. The astrolabe represents a 3D star map on a flat surface. It was also a navigation device. Its history began over 2000 years ago. Over the centuries knowledge was developed and increasingly complex devices were built. Arab scholars deserve great credit for this. Sources report that with this device, for example, a very accurate map of Baghdad was created in the Middle Ages. It was thanks to them that the astrolabe arrived in Europe in the 12th century. Until about 1650 it was the most common astronomical instrument, after which it was replaced by more precise instruments.
