A row of several touching identical steel balls is suspended on strings. When one of them is pulled back and released, its impact on the others causes only the last ball on the opposite side of the row to swing out. Its swing will be almost the same as that of the first one. Similarly, when we lift and release two balls, two balls swing out from the other end. In general, as many balls swing out at the end of the row as are lifted at its beginning, while the remaining middle balls stay still. This behaviour is often perceived by laypeople as a paradox.
