Old World Map - Orbis Terrarum reprint - P. Plancius, 1594

Old World Map - Orbis Terrarum reprint - P. Plancius, 1594 A reprint of the historical map by Petrus Plancius (1552-1622) from 1594 is a decorative element that is hard to pass by indifferently. The world map Orbis Terrarum Typus De Integro Multis In Locis Emendatus is a feast for the eyes. Full of colour, information and allegorical figures, the map invites repeated study. The reprint was prepared with the greatest care to resemble the original map. The texture and colour of the paper are meant to recreate the material on which the originals were printed. The map shows the two hemispheres of the Earth: eastern and western, but the dominant element of both parts is the still unexplored continent placed in the south: Magallanica. Ships sail across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and a sea monster emerges off the south-western coast of Africa. Above and below the hemispheres are celestial spheres showing the constellations of the north and south. Plancius was known for his work on the southern constellations. Between the hemispheres and celestial spheres are an astrolabe and a compass rose, testifying to the importance of these inventions in the 16th century.Plancius's map has great geographical value for its time, thanks to his knowledge gained in the Dutch East India Company; Plancius mapped the Arctic and the Far East. The map also contains an attempt to determine the north-west passage - Plancius followed three expeditions of Willem Barents in this region. An old world map is an exceptional decoration that will give any room an atmosphere of discovery. It will certainly serve well as a gift for a traveller and a historian.
